The Cultural Veil
As Hispanic pride flourishes across the U.S., many cultures are navigating new challenges while embracing their heritage. Among them, Puerto Rican Americans demonstrate powerful resilience, rooted in their island’s complex history and cherished status as a U.S. territory. The sculpture, The Cultural Veil, captures this duality. Each day, we intentionally wear a "mask"—a testament to the fierce pride that blends our rich cultural heritage with the American experience. This visual element, reminiscent of symbols once used to demean or silence, is now reclaimed as a symbol of strength and resolve. We walk proudly as Puerto Rican Americans, celebrating an identity rooted not only in our island origins but also in our vital role within this nation. Despite the struggles and the feeling of being overlooked, we affirm our existence and our right to hold our heads high, merging both cultures while confronting the fears that come with profound dual identity.
